The Canadian government has proposed a number of changes to the rules and procedures for obtaining citizenship, effective October 2017.
List of all the requirements:
- Demonstrate proficiency in English or French and knowledge of Canadian history, values, customs, etc. if you are between 18-54 years of age.
- You must be physically present in Canada for 3/5 years before applying for citizenship
- You must file Canadian income taxes, if required to do so under Income Tax Act, for 3/5 years, matching the new physical presence requirement
- You may count each day you were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident as a half-day toward meeting physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum credit of 365 days
