Two Different Rule Sets — Degrees vs. College Programs
If you completed a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD: The field-of-study restriction does not apply to you. You can apply for a PGWP regardless of what you studied, provided you meet the language requirement.
Language requirement: CLB 7 in all four skills — reading, writing, speaking, listening. In IELTS terms, that is 6.0 in each band individually, not as an average.
If you completed a college diploma, certificate, or non-degree program: Two additional requirements apply. First, your program must fall within an eligible field of study, determined by your program’s CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs) code. Second, your language requirement is lower — CLB 5, which is approximately IELTS 5.0 per band.
The CIP code is assigned by your institution to your specific program. It is not the same as the program name. A “Business Technology” program may have a different CIP code than “Business Administration” at another school. Check your CIP code with your institution’s registrar before assuming you qualify.

How Long Will Your PGWP Be?
Program Length PGWP Duration
Under 8 months Not eligible
8 months to under 2 years Same as program
2 years or more 3 years
Master’s degree (any length) 3 years
PhD 3 years
The 180-Day Rule
You must apply for your PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of graduation from your institution. Missing this window is a serious problem. If you are approaching it or have already passed it, contact us immediately — options exist but they are time-sensitive.
What If Your Program Is Not Eligible?
If your college program’s CIP code is not on the eligible list, a PGWP is not available to you through the standard route. This does not necessarily mean you are out of options — an employer-supported work permit, a bridging permit, or enrolling in an eligible program are all possibilities worth exploring.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you apply before your study permit expires and meet certain conditions, you may be authorized to continue working on maintained status. Confirm your specific conditions with us before assuming this applies to you.
Does a second Canadian program help me get a longer PGWP?
In some cases, yes. Combined program lengths can result in a 3-year PGWP. The rules are specific — confirm at consultation.
