AAIP September 2026: 722 Invitations and Only 1,739 Nominations Left

Alberta issued 722 invitations to apply for a provincial nomination across three Alberta Advantage Immigration Program draws held on September 1, 3 and 9, 2026, published together in a single update on September 10. The Alberta Opportunity Stream took 575 of them at a cut-off of 56, down from 58 in August.

The invitation numbers are the headline. The number that should actually shape your decisions this fall is further down the province's update: 4,864 nominations issued against a 6,603 allocation, leaving 1,739 spaces for the rest of 2026. Two pathways are close to empty. Here is how that changes the calculation depending on which stream you are sitting in.

The Three September AAIP Draws

Both Express Entry pathways held at 60 for a second consecutive round. The movement was all in the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

What the Drop to 56 Actually Tells You

A falling cut-off is usually read as good news, and for candidates scoring in the mid-50s it is. But read it alongside the volume: Alberta issued 743 invitations on August 14 at a cut-off of 58, and 575 on September 1 at 56. The province invited fewer people at a lower score.

That combination points at pacing rather than generosity. Alberta has 837 Opportunity Stream nominations left against an allocation of 3,562, and roughly three and a half months to spend them. Smaller rounds reaching deeper into the pool is what a program does when it wants to keep drawing without running out early.

The pool itself explains why the cut-off can drop without opening the floodgates. Of the 35,957 worker expression of interest profiles Alberta is holding, 22,381 name the Alberta Opportunity Stream as their stream of interest. Two points of movement in a pool that size sweeps in a great many people — and still leaves far more of them waiting than it invites.

If you are sitting at 54 or 55, the honest advice is not to wait and hope for another two-point slide. It is to find the points you are missing. In practice that usually means a language retest, adding a spouse's language result, or correcting an expression of interest that understates the work experience you actually have.

Where Alberta's 2026 Allocation Stands

As of September 9, Alberta had issued 4,864 nominations against its 2026 allocation of 6,603, with a further 1,238 applications still in processing.

Two lines in that table deserve more attention than the draw results did.

Tourism and Hospitality has 15 spaces left. With 3,372 profiles in the pool naming it, that stream is effectively finished for 2026. If your plan depended on a Tourism and Hospitality nomination this year, you need a second route now, not in December.

The Express Entry priority-sector pathway has 92 left. At recent volumes that is about one more round, against 5,067 profiles waiting on it. Candidates holding out for it should be running a parallel strategy, whether that is the Opportunity Stream, the Rural Renewal Stream if a designated community is realistic, or a federal Express Entry category draw.

Separately from the 6,603 allocation, Alberta has nominated 50 practice-ready physicians and 12 Francophone candidates under a federal initiative offering additional spaces across all provincial programs. Those do not consume provincial allocation, which is worth knowing if you are a physician or a French-speaking candidate weighing your options.

What To Do Now, By Situation

You are in the Opportunity Stream pool at 56 or above. Your file should be application-ready before the next round, not after it. The common failure we see is a candidate getting invited and then spending three weeks chasing an employment letter or a missing reference. Have the employer letter, pay records, work permit history and language results assembled now.

You are at 50–55. Treat the September cut-off as a target, not a promise. Work out precisely which factor is costing you points. A single CLB band on one language ability is frequently the difference, and a retest is faster and cheaper than waiting three months for a draw that may not come down far enough.

Your occupation is in tech or health care. Both pathways have held at 60 across consecutive rounds, which makes planning easier. The Accelerated Tech Pathway has roughly two rounds of allocation left at 172; the Dedicated Health Care Pathway has more room at 208. Confirm your occupation is genuinely on the eligible list before you build a plan around either.

You are an Alberta employer. If a worker's permit runs out before a nomination lands, the file does not pause politely. Map the permit expiry against a realistic nomination timeline, and if there is a gap, an LMIA-supported work permit or another status-maintenance strategy needs to be started well before the last month.

Your stream is nearly out of allocation. Do not spend the fall waiting. Get a second pathway assessed properly, including whether a move to a designated rural community or a different provincial program is realistic for your household.

A Word on the 2027 Allocation

Alberta's allocation is set federally and announced late in the year. Anyone assuming 2027 will be larger is guessing. The provinces' combined allocation was cut sharply for 2025 and has not returned to earlier levels, and nothing announced so far suggests a rebound. Planning on the basis that next year will be easier is the single most expensive assumption we see clients make.
